The Donald Chen Young Artist Award
A fund for the Donald Chen Young Artist Award, established in 2008 to honor Dr. Chen’s twenty-four years as our Music Director, supports and promotes young, emerging singers.
NSCS Music Director Donald Chen retired at the end of our 72nd season; to honor him, the North Shore Choral Society established the Donald Chen Young Artist Award to give a talented young singer a stipend and a solo role in one of our concerts.
Donations may be made directly to this fund and are acknowledged in our concert program booklets.
The first Donald Chen Young Competition was held in 2010. Eight finalists were selected from applications received by March 31 from aspiring singers ages 19-26 who reside in the Chicago area. The finalists competed in a live audition before a panel of judges that was held on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1024 Lake Avenue in Wilmette. These auditions were open to the public.
The first Donald Chen Young Artist will perform as soloist during our 75th Anniversary Season (2010-11). See our news article about this!
